Tarte Rainforest of the Sea: Drench Lip Splash Lipstick and Water Foundation Review & Swatches

I purchased a couple of items from the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Collection.
This collection is at both Sephora & Tarte. Below are my thoughts.

Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Drench Lip Splash Lipstick

in Cabana Boy, Beach Bum & Happy

You'll love the formula, hate the colors (at least me) and despise the packaging (at least me)! LOL This is a first for me, because it's usually the other way around. The formula for these lipsticks are wonderful. They're creamy, smooth, hydrating and apply well to the lips. But the color selection is tricky and may look better on lighter skin tones! :P I picked neutral colors, but they are SO BLAH & BLAND looking on me! Even the red (Happy) is not the cheeriest red. There's no way, I'll be able to wear these alone. I will have to wear eyeliner, blush...the whole shebang to bring these out. The packaging is pretty to look at, but it feels cheap. When you twist the lipstick UP, it feels like it's going to break. Also, Tarte does not give you much lipstick. You are getting less than 1" of lipstick. As mentioned above! If you click too much, the lipstick might break (which is what happened with my Happy, which I'm not very Happy about LOL). For $22 each, you shouldn't have all of these problems. You can find MUCH BETTER lipsticks. I would skip these.

Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Water Foundation, Broad Spectrum SPF 15

I also tried Tarte's Rainforest of the Sea Water Foundation. I'm wearing it in the pics above (w/primer, concealer,, powder & makeup). I'm also wearing it below with just primer. Tarte says, this is a medium to full coverage foundation. I say medium. I found if you keep layering, it's going to look like a mask. There are 12 shades and the higher you go up (WOC), the harder it is to match. I'm wearing it, in the shade medium-tan-sand (which is the 3rd to last shade). On my hand, it gives off a yellowish-orange tone. I was like, oh no. LOL I applied it to my face and it looked ok at first, but as it dried, that yellowish-orange tint became more apparent (which is never a good look). I also felt this made me look sullen & ashy (dead like the lipsticks ... hahaha). I've tried this foundation with both a brush & beauty blender. The beauty blender gave me a more EVEN coverage. I don't like the dropper. There's foundation all over the dropper and also around the top portion of the bottle. So it gets messy. Beautiful frosted bottle & cap. The makeup doesn't feel heavy. I feel this is more of a youthful foundation and for someone who has great skin. Any imperfections you may have, it clings to them. For WOC, it's going to be a struggle finding the right shade. I've seen YouTube videos, where this foundation looked beautiful on the individual and others ... not so much. So there are A LOT of variables if you're interested in this. I'm personally not impressed with it. It does have SPF 15 and it's suppose to not cause camera flash back. It doesn't have parabens or pthalates.

  1. With the hits, you also get misses right! The lip colors don't look bad on you but I get why you find them blah since they don't seem to have much impact or give off any sense of vibrancy. And for $22 they shouldn't be skimping on product. Thanks for your honesty Kim!

  3. Those lipstick shades remind me a lot of the colours I covetted in the late 90s, when I was starting high school - colours I now look back at and think, why did they ever wear those, they were so dark and dismal! But it's great to hear that the formula is so good, because hopefully that means they will come up with more - and better colours - later on if people love it!

  5. Love that you are sharing your honest thoughts with us. I was never really intrigued by this line anyway...now I definitely won't be buying anything. The lipsticks look okay, but nothing out of this world. And at $22 and so little product...no thank you!

  6. I like the cabana boy lipstick and the red looks really nice on you Kim! Too bad these and the foundation were kind of meh. The packaging is pretty but if it feels cheap, then it probably is lol!! I was curious about this foundation, but I think I was more interested in the one that came out from tarte that was at Ulta. It was some kind of gel foundation that was in a jar or something? I can't remember! Thanks for your honest thoughts, as always!

  7. Well, I must admit that the lipstick have a dull tone, it is a pity, the product has a nice package.

  8. Haha totally love your honest opinion on the foundation Kim ♥ I actually quite like the packaging of the lipstick, but it's so expensive and I have never tried tarte product, I was afraid that I buy and the quality is not good. Heheheh ~ thanks for such a good review!

  9. This is good to know! Even in the photos the lip colors look dull and flat. Thanks for sharing! I want to try Tarte but I will try something else of their line

  12. I can see how the lipsticks are a bit dull. I prefer brighter colours.

  13. Such a shame that the colours don't work for you Kim, especially as the formulas (of the lipsticks at least) were so great. Hopefully they come out with more colours, and better packaging!

  15. As always, it's great to hear an honest opinion. Still I think the lipsticks look so beautiful on you and I really like the glow effect of foundation. :)

  16. Despite the misfortune about the colours, I still think some of them look great on you, the Happy is my favourite. Thanks for sharing your review on these Kim, it's always a treat to see the latest beauty items from you. <3

  17. Kim, just by looking at the pics, I would've thought the lipsticks were rad. You make them look good, girl! But if you don't like them, that's the important thing. Thanks for the honest reviews as usual. I was thinking of trying that foundation, but I'll skip it.

  18. Awww! I actually like these lip colors on you. :)

  19. Not only did you not rate the foundation well, I have to admit that it does not do anything for you.
It looks patchy Kim, you have tried other brands that work marvelously.

  20. Oh Kim, I am so sorry that these didn't work out well for you. :-( I was so tempted to pick up the foundation after reading some pretty good reviews but now I'm not so sure. I think it's something that I personally need to swatch in store first. And dang, huge shame about the lipsticks making you look dead but Cabbana Boy looks like the perfect mauve shade that I am currently looking for! It's so pretty!

  21. It seems like tarte wants to release so many new and limited edition items that the quality is falling behind because of it. That's a shame that nothing worked out. Thanks for the honest review!

  22. What a bummer these didn't work for you! The packaging is definitely beautiful but $22 for less than an inch of lipstick is NOT worth it. I'm glad I get to try the formula out with the 500 point perk that I got. The colors are pretty but its a shame that don't have a better range of colors to work with more people. I liked the sample of the foundation that I tried but for the price, I want to go to sephora and get a bigger sample before I decide to fork over the cash for this. Thanks for the honest review Kim!

  23. Ouch, it's a bummer that neither of these is good. i hate cheap packaging - spend the extra money on packaging that feels good in your consumer's hands!

  24. Thanks for the honest review on these, especially on the lipsticks. There's nothing worse than lipsticks that's looks like it's about to break after a twist or two, so disappointing.

  25. Great, honest review! The packaging is not that bad, but the price is a little high for so little lipstick. Thanks for sharing.

  26. What a shame...love the packaging. I see what you mean about the lipsticks though, one would need all whole face of makeup to get them to pop. But, I appreciate an honest review :)) Happy weekend lovely xx

  33. Foundation is so tricky, i feel like you always see it in the dry flakes, my skin will look pretty glowing until I put foundation on, think I am going back to tinted moisturizer or a BB cream.

  34. Yet another GREAT review, Kim! I love the packaging, too bad it feels cheap and I agree, the colors seem to be a bit cooler in tone; they should've gone with a true red color, so it would work well on all skin tones! That foundation is definitely NOT for me, haha, so thanks for the heads up! I need something with full, build-able coverage because I have some healing acne scars. I once was using the Amazonian Clay foundation and had to stop because when I tried to build, it looked really cakey and showed every flaw! Anyway, thanks again for the great review and I hope you're having a wonderful day so far, beauty!
