The Becca Cosmetics x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Collection Review & Swatches

I want everybody to play Prince's song C-O-N-T-R-O-V-E-R-S-Y for this review! Let me tell you why! Popular YouTuber Jaclyn Hill via Becca Cosmetics came out with a Champagne Pop Shimmering Pressed Powder Skin Perfector (highlighter) last year (2015) that flew off beauty store shelves AND online. It was a major hit! I purchased it (last year), but packed it away because my house was being remodeled. So I was excited to see that Jaclyn Hill was coming out this year (2016) with even MORE Champagne Pop goodies (blushes, eye shadows etc). There was a pre-sale for this collection on Sephora! It sold out! Sephora re-stocked and it sold out AGAIN! Everything was grand until this past Wednesday! :(

As I was reading through my Twitter feed, I read a tweet that stated the eye shadow palette was going to be DISCONTINUED and anyone that purchased one, could get a full refund or store credit from Sephora. Discontinued? Not Sold Anymore? It just came out! That's not good! When I hear anything about a product being pulled from shelves etc. (especially makeup) the first thing I think is my skin going to turn red or will my eyelid fall off? LMAO Well thankfully, that was NOT the case. The eye shadow palette was being pulled because of poor formulation. Some eye shadow palettes applied well and some did not (there were complaints from consumers of eye shadows being dry, not very pigmented, overall poor formulation). I didn't want the palette at first, because I saw someone's swatches and they didn't look good. But then I saw some YouTuber reviews and theirs looked great! So I bought it!

The most eye opening complaint was from a very smart YouTuber (SHE LOVES Becca eye shadows & palettes, but noticed this new one didn't perform the same). She looked up the formula/ingredients of the eye shadow palette & discovered BECCA was using CATRICE & ESSENCE eye shadow formulas. Whaaaat? Essence & Catrice are cheap economical. I just paid $40+ for this eye shadow palette and they contain ahem ...economical formulas. Thanks for calling them out girl! Wait...that's not all!

Becca outsourced the eye shadow palette job to a factory in China after deadline constraints for this collection. So then some people raised the question, was anything tested on animals!?! I think Becca is cruelty free. Now, I have nothing against China or products made in China. I buy everything from everywhere! The problem I have is, IF YOU HAVE A FORMULA (1 spoon of this... 2 cups of that... this ingredient...that ingredient) you should be able to make whatever you're trying to make.... ANYWHERE (CHINA, RUSSIA, JAPAN, AUSTRALIA, EUROPE)! As long as the factory has the measurements, ingredients & equipment they should be able to make it. Well something fell apart, because some people's eye shadow palettes worked well and MANY did not. Jaclyn stated she was only responsible for one eye shadow out of the five and Becca was responsible for the rest & manufacturing. Becca states the China lab got the formula wrong. So there was A LOT OF BLAME going on, but both Becca & Jaclyn Hill apologized. People were really mad and voiced their opinions both on Jaclyn's & Becca's instagram and twitter pages. I was taken aback at first, and didn't know what to do. I swatched & applied everything. I love the collection. I just had problems with some of the eye shadows. I think it's a learning experience for ALL involved. There needs to be better Quality Control...better oversight of labs Becca contracts with...when collaborating with a brand dot your i's and cross your t's (ask everything) because your name & credibility are at stake. People loved Jaclyn, then hated her, some are back to loving her and some have left her over this. I've never tried anything from Becca, so in my review below I have nothing to compare it to. What bothered me the most was that Becca sold us cheap formulated eye shadows instead of giving us quality ones (as expressed by others who have them). But they have yet to admit this! They just said, the formula wasn't right because of the China lab. Another controversy is that the original Champagne Pop is different from the new one in the Face Palette. Drama!!! I will visit your blogs today. I've been consumed all week figuring this debacle out, analyzing and swatching. LOL :P My review & thoughts on all 5 products are below...

 Sweet-Bittersweet-NotSweet
supersweet(run & buy it) sweet(really good,buy it) bittersweet(ok, issues)not sweet(not good,don't buy this stuff)

Becca x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Collection Face Palette - Sweet

The Becca x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Collection Face Palette is composed of three blushes (rose spritz - luminous blush; amaretto - mineral blush; and pamplemousse - mineral blush) and two shimmering skin perfectors (champagne pop & prosecco pop). The blushes & shimmering skin perfectors have excellent pigmentation! The blushes are so pigmented, you only need a swipe per cheek and a light one at that. I used a very light hand when applying. My two favorite blushes are rose spritz & amaretto. I love both shimmering skin perfectors! Prosecco is a stunning gold! I created 3 looks below using this palette.

Becca x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Pop Pressed - Sweet

This is the popular shimmering skin perfector that started it all last year...Champagne Pop Pressed! The controversy this year? Was the 2016 version (shown in the face palette above) the same as the 2015 version (shown directly below). I never used mine from last year (home remodeling), so when I swatched both side by side there was a slight difference in my opinion. The old champagne pop looks lighter than the new! The color looks the same, but the new formula seems a little thicker or heavier in my opinion. Not bad! I rather like it, but that's what I noticed. It's a beautiful highlighter. I'm just wearing it with basic makeup (no blush) below to show you it's effect. I like it.

Becca x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Pop Poured - Sweet

So above is the pressed version and this is the poured. I will have to get use to the poured version. It's very creamy (like cream blush). You apply it wherever you want to glow. I applied it on my nose and cheeks. It produced a nice effect on my face, but again I have to get use to applying it. As you can see, it gives off a more subtle effect than the pressed powder. I thought others might be interested in seeing a comparison of all three. So I swatched them below: pressed (left), poured (middle), new palette champagne pop (right).

Becca x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Pop Liquid - Supersweet

I LOVED THIS! This is the Champagne Pop Shimmering Skin Perfector Liquid. Mix this with your primer, foundation etc and it will give you an overall GLOW! It was hard capturing a glow, but it is lovely. I was really impressed with this! One pump for your entire face! If you can do a half a pump, try and only do that! A little goes a loooooong way! You don't need much. Warm it up with your fingers or with your foundation and wait for the magic. Love! Love! Love! I wonder if this is like Becca's Backlight Priming Filter? Someone let me know ;)

Becca x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Collection Eye Palette - Bittersweet

Here's the problem child! The eye shadow palette! Like I said before, I saw some bad swatches at first and wasn't going to buy it. Then I saw a YouTuber swatch it & apply it and decided to buy it. LOL Mine was made in China. I don't know if others were made in USA. The first two shimmers (Chardonnay & Champagne Toast <----Jaclyn Hill was responsible for CT) swatched beautifully. The last three (Cordial, Cognac and Bordeaux) swatched patchy. I said ok, well let me try it on my eyelids. I applied Cordial as my transition color and surprisingly it applied well. I applied bordeaux to my outer v, champagne toast to my lid and chardonnay to my inner eye. SO MUCH FALL OUT! I've never experienced such fall out with eye shadows in all my life! Thank God I did my eye makeup first and then my makeup. I then applied Marc Jacobs eyeliner and Urban Decay Perversion mascara. The eye shadow stayed once applied, but I had to wipe off a lot of fall out. Throughout the day, they tended to fade. Will I keep this? I do like 3 out of the 5. I'll probably use them with better quality palettes I have in my collection. Overall I LOVE THIS COLLECTION! I'm just disappointed in Becca. I think they know more than what they are saying. So before I buy, I'll keep a watchful eye on them. I have 2 other products from them I purchased last year. So I'll review those next week. Sorry I didn't blog much this week, but THIS threw me for a loop. See you Sunday with my Snapchat favorites! FYI: my foundation is Too Faced Born This Way in Sand, Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer in Medium, Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Gloss in Undressed, eyeliner above and mascara above.

  1. Nice collection, love the face palette. So bad that the eyeshadows are not as good as expected. Nice review and pics. You look super sweet :)

  2. WOW this is an eye opener Kim, Jaclyn Hill did emphasize more than once that if she did not have her full input and touch of the product before it goes out she will not let it happen that means she is as responsible as Becca. If she lie than now she in the corner unfortunate and she has to deal with the heat. These beauty brand companies I feel they use the Youtubers and the Youtubers are so excited to get something out with their name on it they never think of the consequences, by not fully doing their homework and getting credit when is obvious you did not have an input in ingredients or where is manufacture is a lesson learn. Great post doll this is my opinion nothing against Jaclyn Hill.

  3. Wow, such a shame there is so much upset and drama around the eyeshadows. Really takes away from the rest of the collection. Odd that some would be okay and some not - seems more like a manufacturing/production defect but I know nothing about makeup haha!

  4. Kim , first of all, thank you for doing all these swatches. So amazing how you really take the time to do all these. The Champagne Pop Liquid reminds me of a better version of the Revlon Skinlights that I used to love! Out of all the stuff in the collection, this is the one I'd probably get.
Now, as for that controversy...wow! TBH, I've never heard of Jaclyn Hill! I'm so behind the times! And this is what happens when companies feel the pressure to get stuff out there because of public demand...sigh...Nowadays, you can't let anything pass the discerning public and with social media, it's so easy to get the information out there! What was Becca thinking? :(

  5. The eyeshadows palette seems to be the one disappointing even though I have to say the shades looks so nice on u Kim! xo

  6. I was so colse to purchasing the eyeshadow palette however I told myself that I will wait for the Face palette to come back in stock and then I'll place an order for both together. Becca is cruelty free as I know it and I believe the animal testing rule in China is different now. If the company is selling their products in China then animal testing is required but if the products are made in China but not sold there then animal testing have never been required (http://www.hsi.org/news/press_releases/2014/06/china-implements-rule-change-063014.html). I hope this helps but yes, it's a huge shame about what happened with the eye palette, shame on Becca.

  7. What a pity to hear about the palettes, particularly the eye palette with the fall out. I had no idea there was such drama about these, although I have seen this palette, I typically wait a while before purchasing new launched products. There are actually more companies than you think that produce through the Orient, but obviously like you said, something went wrong -- they probably cut corners in some way for the results to vary like this or steps were missed. As always, thanks for sharing your experience with us.

  8. First I want to say your makeup looks BEAUTIFUL Kim! You did a great job with your eye makeup, despite the fact that you weren't too thrilled with the palette!! The cheek palette looks gorgeous, as does the other highlighters! The whole collection is stunning.

I watched all of Jaclyn's snap chats explaining what happened with the eye palette. I feel bad for her. It's so strange that some palettes are great quality and some aren't. I'm glad they are giving refunds for the bad ones though. And you're right, If you have ingredients and a machine, how hard can it be to follow and creat the same formula? It should be possible. I don't want to point fingers, but I just wonder how Becca couldn't have known what was happening. I'm glad they have apologized and want to make things right though!

  9. What a shame - I'm not really familiar with any beauty YouTubers, but I think this story shows just how easy it seems to get into the world of producing products, but how hard it is to do it well. It sounds like Jaclyn did the right thing by pulling the inferior eyeshadow palette and I have to say, I think the rest of the products look gorgeous, but I'm sure the damage that the eye shadow did was significant, and how sad when Jaclyn was just trying to pursue something she's so passionate about.

  10. I actually totally missed the controversy on this because the youtubers who wore it all looked amazing. I heard talk about it being pulled from the shelf but didn't know until now why. That's upsetting! but I wouldn't blame Jaclyn because it seems like more of Becca's issue.

  11. Ah, your moving swatches are always so helpful! Despite the controversy, I still think this is a totally lovely palette! I'm so tempted by the face palette :)

  12. Oh wow the backstory and all that controversy! Shame on Becca for not owning up to the debacle with the eyeshadow palette. Honestly it would be better if they just admitted, apologized and moved on. Bummer about the quality of the eye palette but the makeup look you created is gorgeous Kim!

  13. I was SO close to buying the eyeshadow palette, I had it in my cart and was ready to checkout, but backed out last minute. So much controversy and drama for sure. I mean, if you are that short on time, why not just push the date back a bit...it would not have been that big of a deal.
And I think I'm the only person who has to disagree and say they don't like Champagne Pop. I bought mine last year and it's just too chunky and has really big glitter chunks running throughout. I just wasn't a fan, and literally never use it.

    ReplyDelete
  14. The controversy sounds so fun! That is scary hearing about a cosmetic being pulled from the shelves. Luckily it was not harmful! The palettes are all so pretty. :)

  15. Let me say that I LOVE Becca. I have the Champagne Pop highlighter and I've played with dozens of their products with glee soaking into those moments. That said, I am sorely disappointed in this lack of quality control. If I can manage to get my hands on it, I'll probably still buy the CP liquid because it looks gorgeous, but it's a real bummer knowing they let the eyeshadows go to shit. BTW, cosmetic companies can manufacture in China and remain cruelty free, but they cannot SELL in China and remain cruelty free. So if Becca isn't selling these products in Chinese stores, they should still be CF.

  16. Hi Kim, as always your makeup looks great on you! The only way you can learn and see if you like a product is to try it out yourself. I feel if you are going to spend a lot of money on makeup it better be good and good quality! Thanks for testing and reviewing all of these products.
    Enjoy the weekend.

  17. Oh wow ! What a story !!! I had no idea about this. To be honest, no idea Becca existed... I know, shame on me.
I've got to say that I do hope they don't test on animals and that I would be ssooo UPSET and disappointed if I had purchased this. If I were her I'd be upset too because its HER name on that box and backing up a cheap Essence or Catrice formula product.
Its a shame because its a beautiful palette and I have got to say I love the way you look in that last picture with the dramatic eyes.

  18. WOW, WOW, WOW! I had no idea about all the drama that's been surrounding this collection, so this was all new to me! I love Jaclyn and she appears to be a great person, who shows great integrity. What I think may have happened here was that BECCA expected there to be such a huge overwhelming influx of sales for her collection, that they went the cheap route with their formulation to cut cost. Business wise, I think that's what was done and in the end it showed. How often does a new release continually sell out and in such a short amount of time? Not very often, unless you have a huge influencer collab with MILLIONS of supporters. I think it's so immature for people to unfollow or no longer support Jaclyn because I honestly don't believe she knew anything about this, how could she? She was the creative mind behind the product, but she has nothing to do with all the other steps involved. That's the thing with people, though, unfortunately, they'll love you one day and hate you the next. Like you said, I think this was a lesson learned for all parties, these things unfortunately happen. Thanks so much for sharing, beauty, and I hope you have a great weekend ahead!

  19. It's such a shame about the eye palette as they look like really pretty shades. I'm surprised that the palette got released if there has been such a backlash. The new collection hasn't been released in the UK yet but I'm hoping to get the face palette and after your review I want the Champagne Pop liquid! xo

  25. My eyeballs are really popping out right now and I'm not even wearing any mascara. This such an eye opening post, filled with a lot of information. Thanks for taking your time to do some research and shed some light on the situation. It is such a shame that something went wrong with the formula because the colors are beautiful.

  26. Great in depth review Kim! First of all, you look stunning in your pictures. Your swatches of the eyeshadow palette are far better than mine! Maybe our palettes are a different. Mine don't look that pigmented or maybe you are a better swatcher lol I am hoping to post my review Monday. I agree with you 100% and am glad that you loved the rest of this collection! I was talking to the a beauty advisor at Sephora yesterday and she said she heard they are going to relaunch the palette with the correct formulation. Not sure if I will even bother to get it again if that even happens.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I didn't know anything about it contraversy, but I must say I totally agree with your opinion. If a make up company uses a certain make up formula for their eyeshadows, then they must live up to that and give their buyers what they expect....it is unacceptable that they tried to change their formula hoping nobody will notice (and they even had the nerve to copy it from cheaper brands!) and then they still tried to sell it as a high quality make up! That's so unprofessional! I think Becca's business will surely suffer for this....and as you say, I don't believe it is honest to blame China for it, if there was a mix up in China's lab, how come that that mix up is an exact copy of cheaper eye-shadows formula?

Anyway, I love all the make up looks you created...it is a shame you spend your money on this eye-palette that doesn't work, but at least other products were nice (if I got it right), so it is not a total loss. Maybe this brand is still good, let's just hope they learn from their mistake. Brands really cannot afford many mistakes like this one, the market is highly competitive and just one mistake can cost a particular brand everything!

    ReplyDelete
  28. What a controversy! I'm glad that at least the face products are still really good, and I'm glad that Becca is trying to fix it. I can't help but wonder if they would have done anything if they had not been caught. These products look great on you!

  30. Your final makeup looks stunning Kim! You look gorgeous with black liner. The face palette is really very beautiful and stood out for me from the collection. It is so hectic that Becca tried to cheat their customers with cheaper formulas and manufacturing differences in the eye palette. Becca is always known for quality. I wonder why they decided to do this. It also makes the Youtuber they were collabing with look very bad.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Holy cow, no joke on the controversy! So much drama over makeup!
Aha, but yeah, if you're paying for the quality you'd better be getting it. I'm impressed by that Youtubers dedication to getting to the bottom of it!
