Aveeno Pure Renewal Shampoo & Conditioner Review

Sponsored - When Aveeno sent me (here) a full size sample of their Pure Renewal Shampoo & Conditioner in February, I didn't realize they made hair care products. LOL This made me really excited to try them. My mom (my model below) and I have been using the Pure Renewal system for a little over a month. We're already on our second bottle. The purpose of Pure Renewal is to maintain the hair's optimal moisture levels after cleansing. It's sulfate free (lifts away impurities without over-stripping) and contains seaweed extract (which is rich in vitamins, proteins & minerals). Both of us have had nothing but a pleasant experience while using Pure Renewal. Only distinguishable by the color of the caps, both the shampoo & conditioner look the same. They both have have a creamy white texture and clean scent. The shampoo produces a really good lather and it rinses away cleanly. There's no residue left behind. Your hair feels clean. Your scalp feels clean. The hair feels soft. My mom's hair is relaxed and she's naturally grey. In the picture below, I show her hair after I blow dried it and then after flat ironing it. She did use a detangler, but I had no problem styling her hair. Her hair was light, looked & smelled really good. I have both relaxed, color-treated and very dry hair. Many of you may remember my hair catastrophe the end of last year. I'm happy to say, my hair is filling in. Well I was really skeptical to try a new product on my hair, but this worked for me! My hair felt clean. It felt moisturized. It wasn't stripped or hard to comb through. I'm going to be really honest! African Americans can't use every shampoo & conditioner on shelves at drugstores! Sometimes the formulas strip way too much of the oils out of our hair, than with other nationalities. I can honestly say Pure Renewal is safe for African American's to use. So BOTH of our experiences with this product were positive and I purchased a second set with my own money. The only thing I want to make you aware of (after reading some reviews on Aveeno's website, is if you have a sensitivity to seaweed some experienced itching and had to stop). Out of curiosity, I also picked up their Nourish & Moisturize shampoo & conditioner. It was nice, but heavy. I liked the Pure Renewal better. I achieved the moisture I needed (and trust me, my hair is dry LOL) and it felt cleaner. So those are my thoughts. Sorry it took so long, but I really wanted to test these out thoroughly before I gave my thoughts. The only thing that kept it from Supersweet was the possible Seaweed sensitivity some experienced. Me nor my mom experienced that.

  1. Your mom has beautiful hair!!! How stunning. I'm so glad you both liked these! I haven't tried aveenos shampoos and conditioners but I've been curious about them. My hair is really dry and damaged so I will have to try these. Thanks for mentioning that the other one you tried was too heavy because that sounds like something I'd pick up but I'll try the pure renewal one. I'm glad your hair in filling in too, Kim! I know what it's like to have your hair ruined and it's no fun. I'm picky about hair care from the drugstore too, I was spoiling with using great products in cosmetology school so I gravitate towards those. But it's always nice to find a gem in the drugstore too!

  7. Wow your mom has such beautiful hair Kim! I'm so out of it that I didn't even know that Aveeno made shampoo. That said, it does take me a year to even go through one bottle.

  8. Kim, I want to kiss you for this review! I was so close to purchasing this but opted for the Live Clean shampoo and conditioner instead. They are good but I'm not wow'ed by them. I do have lots of shampoos and conditioners (can there ever be too many?LOL!) but I will be purchasing this duo soon.

ps: Your mum's hair looks amazing!

  9. I agree with everyone else...your mom's hair is gorgeous!! This sounds like a really solid shampoo/conditioner. I like that you said this got the scalp very clean because I tend to get build up from products and I need something that rinses away cleanly. Thanks for the review!

  10. I had no idea that Aveeno made shampoo, either! But your review sounds wonderful and I have to say, I am impressed with how beautifully your mom's hair turned out - the proof is in the pictures. I am very wary of new shampoos. My hair is extremely porous and very few shampoo formulas are light enough to wash clean out of my hair. I will keep Aveeno in mind next time I'm at the drug store, though!

  11. The pictures speak for the product !
In my case, I'm not allergic to seaweed but anything with slight smell will make my scalp act up :(
