So, you have finally decided to do something about that bathroom, yet you have never handled such a project. Of course, you could call in a bathroom contractor, but that would be very expensive, besides, you got an A+ at woodwork and you should be able to handle a bathroom renovation.

Here is a step-by-step guide to planning a bathroom renovation.

Step 1: Decide On A Budget - If you were thinking you simply choose the items and materials and total up, you will need deep pockets. The best approach is to sit down with your partner and fix a budget ceiling - a figure you won’t go beyond, a figure that will set the boundaries for the project. There are those who say, splurge, splurge, splurge for a luxurious bathroom experience. You need to draw the line somewhere.

Step 2: The Floorplan - Assuming we are going right back to four bare walls, create a large floorplan (to scale) showing the dimensions of the room. Spend a morning at a bathroom showroom Woking or your city offers, and choose everything you need. Their staff can answer any questions you might have. You can take advantage of their in-house bathroom design team, who are always happy to help customers with their projects.

Step 3: Create A Tools & Equipment List - You will need a lot of hand tools and some power tools, plus a pair of steps for working at height. You can hire what you don’t have and some of the money you’ll save can be spent on tools that will be used many times in the future.

Step 4: Create A Materials & Appliances List - List every item, no matter how small and using Google, you can also start costing. If you are located in the area, you can head over to the Weybridge bath showroom or do a quick online search to find a bath store near you. They would stock tiles (wall and floor), showers, baths, vanities, mirrors, fixtures and fittings. Top brands at affordable prices allow you to enjoy some luxury and free delivery and save even more money. Cost the list and you should still be under your budget ceiling.

Step 5: Preparing The Site - All the old appliances need to be removed; turn off the water at the mains before you start, and it should be a dry experience. Everything you need should be in the spare room before you do any work. Fill any holes in the walls and leave the old flooring until last, brush the ceiling and lay some old bedsheets on the floor. If you are going to install cork flooring, the tiles need to be in the room for 48 hours to acclimatise.

Step 6: Install Major Features - The toilet, bath and vanity would be the first major items to be plumbed in; leave the protective layer on until the project is almost finished. If you prefer to call in a plumber, he can make short work of this; you may wish to relocate your shower, in which case the plumber is the best person to extend the water pipes.

Step 7: Paint The Ceiling - It makes sense to start at the top and you can also fit the new central light fitting.

Step 8: Tiling - The areas designated for ceramic tiles should be prepared and using plastic spacers, apply the adhesive, install the tiles and use a rubber mallet to gently tap the tiles into place.

Step 9: Fixtures & Fittings - Install your chosen faucets, towel rails, storage units and shelving.

Step 10: The Floor - The final step is to install the flooring, then remove all protection and have a good cleanup.
