Are You Considering a Change of Career?

Career crises are common- you might have worked your way up to what you believe would be your dream job ten years ago, but these days it doesn't feel like a good fit. Maybe you're bored and not being challenged enough, or it might be the other way around, and too much pressure constantly causes you stress and isn't properly rewarded. You might just feel unsatisfied and want to pursue other career interests, or maybe you have no choice as there's no progression available where you are. Either way, if a career change is on the cards, then here are a few things to consider.

Do you want a total career change?
It's worth thinking about your decision, and the reasons you want to make the switch to a new career. As sometimes, a complete change isn't actually needed for you to be happy at work. For example, if you like the job but dislike the company you're with, then switching to a similar role in another company could be the way to go. If you've spent a long time working your way up in your career, making the change is a huge decision, so make sure it's for the right reasons. If you've completely lost interest in the field you work in or have strong passions elsewhere, these would be good reasons to seek a change of career.

What skills and education will you need to acquire?
If you're taking an entirely different career path, before you quit your old job, work on improving your skills or education first. That way, when you come to apply for your next role, you already have some knowledge there, and it could mean you don't have to start right at the bottom. It could also be your only chance of being accepted for a job at all in some industries. You could gain a higher education, or you could build on your existing qualifications. These days you can study online part-time from home so you can do it around your current job. Voluntary work can also be helpful to give you skills and experience in a new field of work.

What new career path do you have in mind?
Do you already have in mind the career you want to move to? If say you're something more rewarding then you might have plans to move into a field such as health or social care which is directly linked with helping people. If you want to earn more money, it could be a high paying manager position you have your eye on, or if you want to get out of an office environment, any jobs working outdoors might appeal to you. Decide on the final job role you'd want to do, and then work out ways to get there.

Leave your company in the right way
You'll need to make sure you give enough notice in line with your contract to leave the company you're with. if you think you're going to have any trouble then read up on your legal rights. Be aware they can’t withhold money from you you've earned as it's considered wage theft.

A career change could be the best thing you ever do; if you're unhappy in your current job, then this is likely to affect the rest of your life too. Work out your options and see if and when you can make a change.
