Classic Summer Love Movies

Summer is quickly approaching (June 21 for the US). I thought it would be fun to put together a list of classic (vintage) movies about Summer and falling in love. I LOVE a good love story. I love romance. All of these movies have a beautiful message. Have you seen these?

Roman Holiday (1953): She's a princess. He's a reporter. She wants to experience a "normal" life and runs away. He helps her to experience "normality" and what it's like to have FUN. They fall in love.Gotta love Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. Gorgeous shots of Rome in this movie.

Shag: The Movie (1989): Four southern girls plan a Summer break (Myrtle Beach, South Carolina) filled with fun. Three are single. One (Phoebe Cates) is engaged. Phoebe Cates, who is engaged, meets a handsome guy. Conflicted on whether to marry her fiancee (rich) or be with the guy (not rich) she just met, she has to make a choice. Who will she choose? The acting was really bad in this movie, but it was SO funny. What made up for it were the beautiful dresses they wore, hair, makeup and songs.

Valley Girl (1983): I think this was the third movie Nicolas Cage ever made (first he was billed in). He is so hilarious in this. This is about a guy from the wrong side of the tracks who meets a girl from a "nice" family (of course from the Valley). The Valley talk gets on your nerves throughout the movie, but the way these two connect and how he pursues her will touch your heart. Plus if you love 80's music, you'll love the songs featured in this movie. It's a cute little story.

Dance With Me (1998): I love this movie. The latin music, professional latin dancing, costumes and makeup are so gorgeous. Vanessa Williams is a professional dancer that participates in professional latin competitions and teaches at a dance studio. Her heart is prisoner to a pompous-asshole that she had a child with (he's also a professional latin dancer). Chayanne, is new to the dance studio and is smitten with her from very first glance. She dismisses him. He never gives up. Asshole rejects her. Chayanne is their to save the day. LOL Oops! Did I tell you everything?

None of these movies are stressful. They're very light-hearted. That's why I chose them. Sometimes we need that in our lives. If you have any favorite Summer LOVE movies, please leave them in my comment's box below. I would love to watch them. Enjoy!

  4. I've never seen any of these! How terrible of me. I always miss out on the classics. I'm not usually a fan of old movies (or the cinema altogether, in fact) so I'm not searching around for films to watch. I do love a good romcom though. Never fails to please. Rosemary x

  79. These are such great recommendations, Kim. They sound like really cool summer movies.

Oh I really should watch Roman Holiday. It's strange I seem to only like Audrey Hepburn's style the best in Breakfast at Tiffany's that I did not think of watching this.

Dance movies are always good no matter the plot coz I mean, everyone watch dance movies for the dances right? But one thing, why do the characters in the middle look like wax figurines? And Vanessa Williams as in the singer?

Shag and Valley Girl sounds like those cheesy retro movies that would make me cringe yet laugh out loud and say "Oh well, these are retro movies." And you're right about loving 80s songs and checking out the dresses, hair and make up. Sort of reminds me of the upcoming summer movie Walking on Sunshine. The plot seems outta the world cliched but for the 80s music, I might just catch it.
