A Gingerbread Weekend...

Brown paper packages, tied up with string. These are a few of my favorite things. Hi everybody! It was a gingerbread themed weekend for me. I wrapped presents with brown paper and gingerbread ribbon. I then attached gingerbread cards with real buttons and glitter on them. Ohhh, but I didn't stop there! I also baked a gingerbread cake. HaHaHa Let me ask you, have you ever tasted gingerbread ice cream? I haven't. I came across some while grocery shopping this weekend. It's new by Blue Bell and the ingredients include cinnamon, gingerbread pieces, marshmallow and red & green sparkles. I didn't buy it because I already have ice cream in my freezer, but it sure sounds and looks good.Companies think of everything!

On a more somber note, I think everyone around the world heard about the tragic events that happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown Connecticut. It was a very sad weekend.

So much needs to be done: increase funding for mental health care and mental health programs, increase funding for public schools, better contingency plans for emergencies and safety, and there's no reason why someone needs to purchase a gun that holds 100 bullets and can shoot a plethora of rounds in a short period of time. I can't believe gun sales went UP this weekend, after hearing all of this. It sickens me to see how many people die each year because of this. If nothing is done, there's only more heartache to come. It's sad. I dedicate this post to all the victims (children and educators). When I look at these little gingerbread people, I can't help but think about them and how they won't be here to celebrate Christmas.

The names and ages of the victims of the Newtown, Conn., shootings: Charlotte Bacon, 6. Daniel Barden, 7. Rachel Davino, 29. Olivia Engel, 6. Josephine Gay, 7. Ana M. Marquez-Greene, 6. Dylan Hockley, 6. Dawn Hochsprung, 47. Madeleine F. Hsu, 6. Catherine V. Hubbard, 6. Chase Kowalski, 7. Nancy Lanza, 52. Jesse Lewis, 6. James Mattioli, 6. Grace McDonnell, 7. Anne Marie Murphy, 52. Emilie Parker, 6. Jack Pinto, 6. Noah Pozner, 6. Caroline Previdi, 6. Jessica Rekos, 6. Avielle Richman, 6. Lauren Rousseau, 30. Mary Sherlach, 56. Victoria Soto, 27. Benjamin Wheeler, 6. Allison N. Wyatt, 6.

  1. Lovely packaging - there's always something very cute about gingerbread men.

The news of that shooting is absolutely horrendous and I cannot begin to imagine how the parents and relatives of the victims must feel - it's heartbreaking... I simply don't understand why the US doesn't have proper gun-control laws like in Europe? It's not the Wild West anymore and there are far too many incidents like this - that's of course only my humble opinion, but it's fair to say that only very few people die of gun-related incidents over here...

Wishing you a lovely week ahead xo

  2. Oh yum! Tis' the season to make ginger bread.

Also, about your somber note, I totally agree. A lot of folks' initial reaction is to strengthen gun control - true. But more importantly, we need stronger care for mental health sufferers. I refrained from commenting on social media because i wanted to read everyone else's response first. But in conclusion - and this is totally my own opinion - I feel that we need BOTH firmer gun control and better mental health care.

Anyway, I said and earful. Can't wait to see more sweet treats from you.

  3. Oh Kim, your gingerbread week - particularly the gingerbread ice cream and the last photo of gingerbread cake - has me practically drooling on my keyboard. On a more serious note, I was really dismayed to hear about the shooting in New Town and my heart goes out to everyone living in the US right now. I'm sad, but not surprised, to read that gun sales went up after the event; I think when people feel the fear that only such a tragedy can bring on, protecting themselves is a logical instinct... unfortunately, protecting themselves with a gun is a shortsighted choice. Wishing you a wonderful Monday, my dear :)

  4. I'm not a big fan of gingerbreads but looking through your pictures make me hungry! =D
My heart goes out to victims of Sandy Hook Elementary School. It is definitely devastating and heartbroken to see such news. I'm sure God has His purpose and a special place for the kids.

  5. yesterday I baked gingerman cookies too, they tasted great but they looked very fatcos of baking powder =)

  6. Gorgeous packaging..I do love brown wrapping for some reason, haha!! And these shootings have been horrible...I don't understand how people don't see how there needs to be tighter laws. It shouldn't be really. I think it must be an array of things to have happen to make it better. But, it can no longer be pushed aside any many innocents have died and these sweet faces deserved a longer life than they were given. Really has saddened me!! I hope you have a wonderful week doll and it gets brighter for everyone, everywhere!! xx

  7. Cute gingerbread weekend! I tried gingerbread marshmallows yesterday. Meh plain but might be good in hot chocolate or coffee! As for the shooting heart goes out to the families and it's insane that we don't have stricter gun laws, help for mentally ill and more security at schools.

  8. Seems like a lovely way to spend a weekend, so sad that like everyone it was brought down by the cruel actions of one man.

Can't imagine how those families are feeling.

  9. i wish i could have a piece of your ginger bread cake!i love the flavour..and that is a horrific incident that happened.i read that the first thing in the morning.

  10. I just picked up Kaluha in the flavor "gingerbread" and mixing it with cream gives you the BEST gingerbread house taste :)

  11. The gingerbread part of your weekend sounds wonderful.
As for the tragedy... I just can't believe that after everything that happened in the last few years it is still legal to buy guns in the States.

  12. Mmm gingerbread! I want to make a gingerbread house before Christmas.

  13. I'm eating gingerbread right now :)

  14. Your packages came out so cute!

I agree a lot needs to be done to stop these tragedies but I'm not sure what. Unfortunately there will always be guns in this country and there will always be people with mental illness that goes untreated.

  15. I love the creative idea for gift wrapping Kim. Sweet indeed! How about gingerbread candles, they smell yummy this time of year.
This was certainly a very sad weekend. I like many had a very quiet and somber past few days. My prayers and thoughts go out to everyone in Newtown. I pray for the safety and well being for all of us. Have a great week dear Kim. Sending you a big big Holiday HUG! xoxo

  16. this looks a look delicious. I read this while eating blueberries...they suddenly lost all flavor lol

  17. i couldn't agree more. i couldn't even read about that this weekend, it's so horrific. what a great post and dedication.

  18. That was so devastating! Are we really going back to barbarism? One very important thing to do is gun control!
Anyways, seems like you had a gala time with all things gingerbread!
    The cake looks yummmm!

  19. Yummy, yummy gingerbread. I want!

And yes, I agree--more needs to be done.

  20. You know, i have had gingerbread cookies, but never baked ginger bread, and it looks really good! Your wrapping paper ideas are so cute! I do love the brown paper, the red ribbon really looks nice on it!

  21. that gingerbread cake looks really good!

  22. Kim, your gingerbread cake looks so moist and delicious! And looks like you're an awesome wrapper. I'm not good at wrapping. Lol.

Yes, I'm very sad for the victims and their families. I try not to think about it but as a mother, I can imagine how the parents are feeling. Life is so unpredictable and I wish everyone should live with no regrets.

  23. Mmm, gingerbread is one of those special treats for me, mainly because it's almost impossible to find here :) I love the gift packaging method you used, very thoughtful and Christmassy!

  24. Can't wait to try out this recipe.

If you get a sec, checkout my latest holidays picks. I know that you will love them.

  25. Fantastic gingerness action going on Kim! I've gone off the ginger thing after continually eating/drinking it during my early Preg days! ha ha!

So so sad about the shooting, it's devasting stuff... my hearts go out to the families and everyone who went through the horrible tragedy.

    Have a fab sweet week!

  26. Your gingerbread themed packages are so cute and sweet! They will surely brighten the day of the lucky recipients. And that gingerbread cake looks scrumptious!

This tragedy was heartbreaking to say the least. I agree with you that there needs to be more funding and awareness for mental health issues/ treatment along with stricter gun control regulations. I can't even imagine how everyone in Sandy Hook is coping but I hope they will eventually find a way to heal and move on.

  27. Adorable! That cake looks yummy! And I love that wrapping! I love kraft paper instead of regular paper. There's a subtle elegance to it!

  28. Oh gingerbread is everywhere now! I am hopefully going to be making some cookies in a few days and gingerbread will be part of it! i love a chewy cookie with a little bit of frosting! :)

And how sad it is about the shooting. We're totally in agreement about how there should be more research and funding for research on mental illness. It's awful how society nowadays kinda just shoves it under the rug.

  29. Wow, gingerbread cake and ice cream, I've had neither of those before, sounds delicious! Is it difficult to make a gingerbread cake Kim? I was so saddened to hear about the great loss of so many people and innocent children in your country. Its too tragic.

  30. ugh I wish I could eat gingerbread!!!

    xo Jackie

  31. Your cake look delicious.
Thank you for recognizing the victims from the shooting. It really is such a sad tragedy.

  32. I love the smell of gingerbread. Sounds like you enjoyed yourself on the weekend.

It's definitely gut wrenching news about what happened, I could not even begin to fathom the lose of a child. xo

  33. Everyone here is so deeply shaken by the shooting. To think that could happen, so close to home, at a place where children are supposed to be safe. it's just so terrible, and even worse that it is just before christmas. it makes it hard to focus on the fun and cookies and presents, knowing those little children wont be having any christmas this year.

    Chic on the Cheap

  34. I'm glad you took a moment to discuss what happened at Sandy Hook. Honestly, I haven't even been able to begin to think, or write, about it - I can't control how terribly sad I am for those families and for those children. I'm completely devastated for those families, all the things they have had to deal with already and what they will have to endure every christmas, birthday, every Dec 14th - my heart literally aches at the thought.

  35. So sad. It's hard to put into words how I feel about this tragedy. Makes you appreciate the things that really matter in life. Great post!

  36. Those look DELICIOUUUS I can0't wait to eat some (I think I0m having some on the weekend)
And, yes, I actually cried, I imagined my little 9 years old brother, and felt so happy to have him alive, next to me, but I truly imagined the pain if that happened here... Different laws on guns are necesary.

  37. Brown paper packaging is a personal favorite. I like em very much and ooh gingerbread.

What happened at Sandy Hook is heartbreaking. I can't fathom how sad Christmas is going to be.

  38. Normally I wouldn't like brown paper as wrapping...but the gingerbread ribbon makes it cute!! :)) Nice touch!

  39. This is a very special post. I appreciate the insight of an American citizen: isn't it too easy to get hold of a gun in the usa?so scary!!
Your gift-wrapping theme is very sweet and I've never seen anything similar. I might copy the idea for next year!!!Lots of love Coco
