Since the outbreak of the coronavirus and Covid-19 pandemic, many of our lives have changed in many ways. Government recommendations to stay at home and to stay out of contact with other people meant that we had to completely change the way that we live. A major area that was impacted for many of us was our careers. Many businesses were unable to operate under these new conditions and ended up collapsing. Many businesses ended up making huge numbers of staff redundant. This meant that many of us lost our jobs. Some of us were placed on periods of furlough and had a lot of time to think about our jobs and what we actually want from our careers, with many of us deciding that the positions we occupied simply weren’t for us. This resulted in many wanting to change careers too. If you’re in a position where you’re job hunting or considering a career switch now, you should take some time to think about what you really want. Here are some considerations to take into account when going through this process.

Consider What You Want To Do

Of course, a great starting place is to sit down and consider what you really want to do. Think of fields you’re interested in. Think of roles that you think could give you some satisfaction. Look at other inspirational figures like Belinda Stronach and consider whether a career path like theirs could be something you’re interested in. Take some time and create a list of options.

What Type Of Hours Do You Want?

How many hours do you want each week? Do they need to be flexible? Having a clear idea of what type of hours you want to work can impact your job choice. Some jobs are able to offer flexible working hours or part time roles, whereas some are more demanding and you’ll struggle to find this type of working pattern in their field.

Do You Want Remote Work?

Remote work has become more popular throughout the course of the pandemic. Many businesses are now offering remote working options.

Are You Happy To Retrain?

You may find that if your new career choice is pretty different from your current or previous roles, you may need to take time retraining. This could involve heading back to higher education to get relevant qualification or undergoing training courses. Are you happy to take time doing this?

Could You Start From The Bottom?

If you’re already in an established career, you could find that starting something completely new means starting from the bottom again. This could mean a reduction in your salary and perhaps applying to lower grade jobs than you’re used to. Is this something that is feasible for you?

As you can see, there are a fair few things to think about when it comes to choosing the right job for you, and the considerations outlined above are just a few starting blocks. Hopefully, some of the advice will help you to land the right position to meet your needs perfectly!
