Five Proactive Ways You Can Take Care of Your Wellbeing

We only get one body and mind, so taking care of them is so important for us to be able to enjoy life to the fullest. Sometimes simple changes we make have huge positive impacts and they’re not that difficult to commit to. Here are some ideas.

Go to bed at the same time each evening
Sleep hygiene’ is a term used to describe your sleeping habits - it involves going to bed at the same time each evening and avoiding distractions at bed time (the main of course being technology). If your sleeping is all out of whack it will affect every aspect of your waking life, from your energy levels to your appetite to your mood. It can take time to establish a new sleeping routine, but it’s something genuinely worth working on. If you go to bed and fall asleep at roughly the same time each evening, you’ll wake up at around the same time. You’ll go to work or go about your day with enough energy and any mood or mental health issues you’re struggling with will be much more bearable.

Get your five a day
Getting your five a day is so easy when you know how. The main way to go about it is to have some form of fruit or vegetable with each meal- a piece of fruit and a glass of juice with your breakfast and you’re already at two. A salad with your lunch, and two types of vegetables with your dinner and you’re there. Not forgetting how things like baked beans, guac, even tinned soups can all contribute (with these kinds of foods however, be aware of salt and sugar content). Snack on fruit- tinned, dried and fresh are all good. Dip veggies into hummus, it doesn’t have to be boring or difficult.

Find ways to relax
The point of life isn’t to eliminate all stress - it’s impossible, and everyone deals with it from time to time. However, it is important that you learn to cope with your stress, when things get difficult, it's crucial you know how to unwind and bring those stress levels back down. It could be hot baths, enjoying a hobby or chatting to a friend. Find out what works for you, just be careful not to confuse self care with self destruct. Eating an entire tub of ice cream in the name of self care for example isn’t healthy, it’s not to say you shouldn't enjoy treats but don’t replace stress with something that’s going to affect your health in another way.

Visit the doctor
Finally, understanding when you need additional help is so important, don’t just suffer in silence. We all experience low mood from time to time, but if yours is ongoing then your GP can help you to access the right treatment. Cognitive behavioral therapy is the best option for some people, for others it’s medication or you might need a combination of the two. Reach out for help if you need it.
