5 Ways to Stay Safe Online

When you spend a lot of time online, either browsing or working, you want to make sure that your details stay safe. With so many hackers, spammers and scammers online these days, you can never be too careful when it comes to protecting your identity online.

So when it comes to protecting your personal information online, there are some simple steps you can take to make sure you aren't giving your details to someone who will steal them.

Use A PO Box.
For those who shop a lot online or work online, for example, bloggers or influencers, you may find that you are continually giving out your personal address. However, another option for this could be setting up a PO Box to have your packages and mail delivered there so you don't have to give your details out.

If you shop internationally or work with international brands, then look package forwarding services which can help you receive your packages from companies who don't deliver to your country. These can then be delivered to your nominated address too to save you share your details to a company in a different country. There is no such thing as too safe when it comes to giving out details to third parties.

Never Click Links in Emails
Scam emails are becoming more and more sophisticated. People who may never have been fooled by a scam email could find themselves being convinced easily. If anyone asks for your details via email, or even in a phone call, don't! Hang up on the call or close the email. Then access the site or company the way you usually would. Some of the most common emails are;

  • Your account has been blocked/suspended/closed
  • Your Card details were declined and payment is needed.
  • There has been a new sign in to your account.
  • Thank you for your purchase of (insert product or service) for ($ random amount), if you didn't make this purchase please click this link.

Change Your Password Regularly
This is the best way to keep your accounts online secure is to regularly change your passwords. Never have the same password for more than one sight and try not to use easy to guess words or number sequences. Think of random words with numbers included and symbols too. Add in capitalisation for extra security.

Check URLs online.
Most sites will have a green security padlock next to the URL for sites that are secure. This means any information you enter will be encrypted and not easily accessed by hackers. You should look for this padlock on every site you use to determine if it is the correct and official site.

WiFi Networks
Public WiFi networks are mostly unsecured. This means any information you send when using open WiFi could possibly be intercepted by hackers and used. If you can, refrain from accessing sites such as banking sites and apps or sites that hold sensitive information. If you're unsure, then stick to using your home network or your cell phone data.
