How To Keep Warm In Bed This Winter

You’ve spent the day working hard (or hardly working) and you’re ready to relax in the comfort of your bed! There are few things better than laying down at the end of a long day and getting all bundled up in your quilt, but the temperature is lowering and your bedroom is probably getting a bit too chilly for comfort already. How do you combat those chilly winter nights? Here are some tips I use for a warm and cozy sleep!

Chill-Proof the House

Before you invest in a heated blanket or put three pairs of socks on, make your house itself as well prepared for the colder seasons. Block the chill from creeping underneath doors by buying or making your own drought protectors, invest in heavier curtains to keep the heat from escaping through the windows (and consider replacing the windows with better insulated options for a more long-term budget benefit). If you don’t mind splurging a little bit, it might be a good idea to try one of the programmable thermostats that are really popular now. You can program it to be cooler during the night when you’re wrapped in blankets, and heat up 15-30 minutes before you wake up so getting out of bed isn’t such a shiver-inducing task.

Prepare for Bed

One of the best ways to stay warm at night is to start warming up before you even hit the pillow! Rather than doing your exercise routine in the afternoon, get it done right before bed so that your muscles will be all warm (and you’ll probably be quite tired afterwards too!) Likewise, take your hot shower or bath before bed instead of in the morning, so that your body can heat up a bit first. A nice hot bath is also a great way to prepare mentally for bed, so light some candles and grab a great book! Looking at your phone or computer right before we go to sleep is something we’re all guilty of doing, but it doesn’t help you when trying to snooze!

Get Toasty

Last but not least, it’s time to make everything nice and toasty! Of course you’ll want a nice thick duvet, click here for some examples, but you’ll probably need more than just a cozy blanket to keep warm! Electric blankets are a great option and will stay on the whole night if you need them to, but they can be a bit restrictive on your budget as they’re both expensive and they really use up a lot of the heating budget. If you’d like a cheaper option, just put a hot water bottle or two under your covers 10 minutes before you get in. To double up on the warmth, throw your pajamas or blanket in the dryer before bed!

It can be difficult to stay warm during the autumn and winter months, especially when there’s a chilly breeze or even snow blanketing the ground, but with these tips you’ll be nice and cozy in bed in no time!


  1. We have turned up the heat to 15C for downstairs as it's been raining a lot and it's getting cold! The temperature has been around 9-10C and the house that we're in now was build by a cheap contractor so the door are not properly sealed. :-( I always take my shower at night because there's just no time in the morning. No way I can shower in peace when the little one is anging at the door demanding attention. LOL!

  2. Turn on the heater for sure, plus a duvet, flannel pajamas and socks would really be comfortable, cozy and warm.

  4. EVen though it doesn't snow here it gets cold in winter, haha! I use the hot water bottle trick sometimes! :)

  6. I always love to take a hot bath before bed. It definitely warms me up, and then when I cool down I have a heating pad I can't sleep without. And I might be weird but I have to sleep with my fan on too LOL

  7. There's nothing worse than being cold in your own home during the winter. We're lucky that we get a good amount of heat in our apartment. It's enough that we can actually wear shorts and t-shirts at home during winter and I love it.

  8. Taking a shower/bath in the evening is a good idea to keep you warm, however I find it more beneficial in the morning. At least for me. But I do love a good bath in general!

  10. These are some great tips! The draft blockers are a great idea. I have a thermostat that I can set to go one a little before I wake up in the AM I love having that option!

  12. These are all such great tips, Kim! I love the one on adding a hot bottles under the covers, I think I may try that one out! We've invested in curtains that are isolated and are supposed to help keep in cool air in the summer and heat during the winter. We've had them for a number of years and I'm pretty satisfied with the way they've worked! I think I had gotten them at Bed, Bath, and Beyond.
