Tarte Shape Tape Hydrating & Matte Foundation in Medium Neutral Review and Swatches

I really wanted Tarte's NEW Shape Tape Foundation to work. I LOVE Tarte's Shape Tape Concealer in Medium. The concealer is so good, I use it as foundation sometimes. When Tarte stated they were coming out with a matching foundation, I just knew it was going to be a win-win situation. I purchased this foundation both in the MATTE and HYDRATING formulas and neither worked for me. First major problem was COLOR. I've tried Tarte's Colored Clay Foundcealer in Medium. It looked really good. I've tried their Tarte Amazonian Clay Full Coverage Foundation in Medium Tan Honey. It looked good. I didn't have luck with their Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Water Foundation in Medium Tan Sand. And I definitely didn't have any luck with the Tarte Empowered Hybrid Gel Foundation in Medium Neutral. Do you notice a pattern here? Every foundation I've tried from them, has been in a different shade. So when I went to purchase these, I started swatching using Medium Tan Honey, since I had success with it before. Well, it was too dark for me. I tried a couple of other shades (swatched) and all became too dark on me. So I settled on Medium Neutral. It looked good in the store, but as I tested this outside and started taking pictures my face & neck just didn't compliment one another. It made me look ashy, grey-ish and just dead. Not as dead as that Rimmel London foundation! LOL But this foundation did nothing to uplift me. I've been looking at other WOC apply this foundation and either they're looking ashy like me, orange or darker skin tones are looking too red. That's a problem! Tarte really needs to step back and put some proper research into their Medium to Darker skin tone selections. Secondly, I didn't like the formula. It settled into my fine lines. It looked powdery. It broke apart throughout the day. I'm just really shocked by all of this, because all Tarte had to do was bottle up the concealer and come out with an array of shades. Do you guys like the background picture I used for my pictures? The crayola crayons as photographed by photographer Adam Hillman (Glamour Magazine, April 2018). Do you get the message? LOL This should've been a walk in the park for Tarte. Look at my picture below and look at my NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation picture. Look at my FACE Atelier Ultra Skin Foundation picture. Look at my Too Faced Born This Way Foundation picture. My head & neck look the same. Not here! One of my blog buddies, Tanya of Leopard Lace and Cheesecake, also reviewed this foundation. Read her review and perspective. Notice from my hand swatches BOTH are medium neutral, but both look different. This is across the board. Some tips! Swatch this on your neck/chest. Let it dry down. Walk outside and take a picture to see how it looks. What comes out the bottle, is not how it will appear on your face. I don't think this formula is for mature women. The coverage to me seems more medium coverage. If you have dry skin, go with the hydrating formula. But I also found I needed to powder my face after application. A little too much shine on my nose, cheeks and forehead. I could've given this a Bittersweet rating, but there's just too much that's wrong. Back it goes!

  2. So sorry to hear that this one didn't work, Kim:( And I find it really odd that Tarte changes their foundation shades for each line. That's crazy! It should be the same across the board, if not exactly then close, amirite?!

  3. Oh that photo backdrop was a great idea! I'm so sorry that they don't have a good shade range! I find picking a foundation the hardest thing, as I'm a bit pale, but I know that I definitely have it easier than most, and that's not right at all. I wish they would be more consistent with the shades, and have a wider range, so it's easier for everyone to find makeup for them. It might not be possible to have a shade for everyone, but it would be great for everyone to have more options!

Hope you are having a great week so far! I'm feeling a bit under the weather unfortunately, trying to rest up (as much as you can with two kids, ha!).

  4. Wow this sounds like such a let down, I hate it when foundation settles into lines, it never makes you feel good about yourself! On a positive note I do really like your crayon background :)

  5. It's a shame that the foundation comes in such odd colors and didn't translate from the concealer. I've been quite interested in their concealer and blush. I guess it's back to the drawing board for them with their blush!

  6. Sorry to hear these weren't any good. The foundation does look greyish on that photo you shared. It seems like the coverage is pretty good, but if it looks greyish then it is not a good match for your skin tone...It seems like their medium to dark formula just isn't right. Thank you for sharing this honest review. It's a shame this didn't work out for you at all.

BTW Thank you for sharing that tips about trying out foundation. I didn't know it is not the same shade as when it is right from the bottle, but it makes sense. I think some perfumes are like that as well, they may change with time. Anyway applying foundation, waiting for it to dry and then seeing whether it matches our skin tone, that seems like a great tip. I will keep in mind the next time I shop for a foundation.

    Have a nice day!

  7. Thank you for the honest review, Kim, shame that the formula didn't work out for you. I don't support Tarte for personal reasons but good to know I'm not missing out on anything.

  8. What a shame that this foundation didn't work out Kim. I remember how much you liked their Shape Tape Concealer. I hd to ban the Tarte brand after their racist meme incident.

  10. That’s too bad this didn’t work out Kim! It’s so sad about all the drama tarte had with not releasing a shade range to match all skin tones, and now the shades they do have are ashy and orange like you said! And also that’s a shame that the shades in weren’t the same for both formulas too! I didn’t have an interest in trying this foundation because I don’t like the shake tape concealer. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this!

  11. I definitely get the picture with the crayon display. 😂 I hate when brands are not consistent with their foundation shades. It is so annoying. Especially when the shade turns grey on us. Tarte really need to go back to the drawing board with this one. I have yet to try the Tarte shape tape concealer. I am so reluctant now because of all the controversy surrounding the brand.

  12. What a shame this foundation disappointed! I was tempted to opt for Tarte instead of my usual Teint Miracle by Lancôme but decided against it and now I'm relieved I didn't look at the brand for foundation! Always appreciate your honest reviews, and I get what you mean about the colour difference - that's a real pity! Nevertheless, brilliant thorough reviews as always Kim, thank you!

  13. A good foundation is just so hard to find, Kim! This is why I am so loyal to the ones I love. I find I like certain formulas but can't find the right shade or find a great shade but the formula doesn't work for me. It's a shame about the shades here because I think this foundation had the potential to be great.

  14. I'm sorry these didn't work from you! No matter what I do my face is always a different color than my neck because I can't ever match my foundation correctly lol. I preferred the matte formula over the hydrating one but the color that I got in the Hydrating matched better. The matte is def more full coverage to me. If you haven't tried the new Physician's Formula Healthy Foundation definitely give that a try. It's not as matte and you may like it better.

  15. I'm sorry these didn't work out for you Kim! And no, I didn't understand the background photo although it's super cute and blends in nicely with the foundation. Btw, did you ever review Rihanna's Fenty line? I'm curious to know how her foundations work out.
