Smashbox Photo Finish Primerizer & Primer Water Review

The Original Smashbox Photo Finish Primer has been my go-to primer since 2013. It does an excellent job blurring my pores and fine lines. However, I also need hydration for my dry skin. My favorite DAY moisturizers are Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base and REN Ultra Moisture Day Cream. Both do a great job moisturizing my skin. I tried the Smashbox Hydrating Foundation Primer. It was a good hydrating primer, but it wasn't as hydrating as the moisturizers I use above and I had to apply the original primer on-top (to blur out pores & lines). Since then, Smashbox has come out with additional hydrating primers. I've been testing these out for awhile now and below are my thoughts on each.

Smashbox Photo Finish Primerizer - Sweet
Smashbox says "Replace Your Moisturizer!" "24 Hour Hydration" I said to myself, those are some extraordinary claims! Smashbox's Photo Finish Primerizer is both a PRIMER + MOISTURIZER! I've been testing this since the end of November. It's really good! It's a milky-colored liquid, that when applied to the skin instantly plumps it. If I don't use moisturizer at night, by morning my skin looks absolutely deflated. I purposefully didn't use moisturizer at night to test this out. With Smashbox's Primerizer my skin plumped up, looked hydrated and my makeup went on effortlessly. I found that it did a great job absorbing into my skin. It works quickly. There was no residue, reaction, or redness while using this product. I still found myself reaching for my original Smashbox Photo Finish Primer to blur, but I didn't need as much. In conclusion, I think all skin types will really like Primerizer. It's not heavy, oily or greasy. It's very lightweight. If you're looking for a great primer and something to plump your skin, then this it. Dry skin types like myself, will appreciate this more in the Spring & Summer months, because I find it provides medium moisture for the skin. In the colder winter-months, this may not be enough for super dry skin. I still needed my moisturizers to hydrate my skin optimally. Smashbox's Primerizer contains Hyaluronic Acid & Niacinamide. Smashbox has also come out with a Primer Oil. I'm going to give it a try soon, because I bet that is for individuals with really dry skin. I'll keep you posted.

Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water - Bittersweet
Smashbox's Photo Finish Primer Water is a PRIMER SPRAY. I was always skeptical about this product, but I wanted to give it a try. I've been testing this since last year! I still have half the bottle left :) It is suppose to hydrate the skin, give your complexion a boost of radiance and prime the skin. It initially hydrates your skin, but for me it didn't last. My super dry skin, just sucked it up. It didn't provide long-lasting results at all. As a primer it was ok. Again, I used the Original Smashbox Primer on top of the Primer Water. Smashbox also says it can be used as a SETTING SPRAY. Again, it was just ok. I ended up finding two different uses for this Primer Water. I use it instead of water, to spray my Beautyblenders! They expanded just the same, and my makeup went on better. It's also great for stray hairs. HaHaHa

  1. I find by reading reviews, the Smashbox primer water is greatly overhyped. I love that you use it for stray hairs. Made me laugh. 😂 Smashbox makeup primers seem to be a real winner. Everyone loves them no matter the type of skin. I need to give it a try. ☺️💖

  2. Oh it's a shame the primer water isn't any good, but wonderful you found some alternate uses for it - I never would have thought to use something like that in my hair, haha!

Hope that you are having a nice start to your week and you had a good weekend! We had a quiet one here.

  3. I'm going to order the primizer because it sounds amazing! And has some of my favourite hydrating ingredients. I adore the Bobbi Brown face base and Ren moisturiser so something tells me I'll like this, as we must have similar skin concerns / tastes.

  4. If my memory serves me rightly, the original photo finish was my very first primer! I really need to go back and see if I still love it! xx

  5. I'm definitely gonna give that Primerizer a try, Kim! I love primers but am so lazy with doing another step to my routine that this primer+moisturizer sounds like a win! Thanks for the review:)

  6. I've read so many positive reviews on Smashbox primer that I've tested it a couple of times. Unfortunately, for me, the result is always the same - the primer doesn't absorb into my skin the way it should, so I wind up with skin that feels filmy. Worse, the primer actually beads off when I remove my make-up! There are a lot of other Smashbox products I love, but their primers are not for me.

  7. I don't use primer much, but have always had smash box primer and am glad you approve! It's a shame the primer water wasn't as effective. I'll stick to the primer and primerizer!

  8. I have never even heard of primer water before. What will they come up with next? Too funny!

  9. I've heard great things about these products and definitely want to try. I've been loving my marc jacobs coconut primer as well which is nice and hydrating under foundation. For night though, I've been adding (fragrance free) oil to my moisturizer which has been amazing!

  11. I guess they tried to have some of the regular primers' good stuff replicated in the water but it did to happen. Like you I am a SmashboxPrimerGal.

  12. The Smashbox Photo Finish Primerizer sounds like something my dry skin would like Kim. I've tried the original Smashbox Photo Finish Primer but it has too many cones in it for my liking. Ooh a primer oil sounds intriguing as well!

  14. Smashbox's Photo Finish Primerizer sounds fabulous. Ah, kicking myself for not using a primer now as I know how effective it can be for makeup application! Oh my gosh, the Primer Oil you've mentioned sounds ideal for dry skin, crossing my fingers for a review of that on your blog at some point :)

  16. Thanks for your honest thoughts! I always thought the primer water was a gimmick. The primer moisturizer sounds nice!

  17. Ah it's a shame the primer water was no good. It's always good to find a multi-purpose product but not so good if it doesn't do the job! Love the pearlescent look of the primerizer, so pretty! I am useless with makeup and though I loved the fact that the Smashbox Photo Finish blurred the appearance of my pores, I didn't notice that my makeup was anymore long-lasting unfortunately.

  18. I don't have Smashbox Primer Water but a blogger friend from the UK sent me Primark Primer Water and I love it! My makeup looks really lovely with it and I think it's a dupe for Smashbox.

  19. For some reason, every Smashbox primer that I’ve tried has broken my face out! So I tend to stay away from them, but I will use my Smashbox primer water over my makeup very occasionally as a setting spray if it’s a special occasion or something! And I use it to wet my brushes to foil shadows with. The primeizer sounds nice tough, Kim!

  20. I never tried Smashbox primer, it's so bad that it doesn't do as it claims. Very nice and honest review Kim <3 Have a great day <3 Kisses <3

  22. I was also a big fan of their original primer when it came out, and even now I still use their eyeshadow primer, which I think works really well! The primerizer sounds lovely, especially since I have dry skin in the winter. It sounds a bit like the Laura Mercier Hydrating Primer in that it moisturizes and primes, and I'm curious as to how they would compare!

  23. I got a sample of their photo finish primer and am a little on the fence. The first time I used it I was blown away. Loved the results but then after two or three different applications it didn't wow me like the first. I've still got a little bit left though, I might give it another go.

  24. Smashbox Photo Finish primerizer sounds like a great product! I love that is both a primer and a mosturizer. These kind of two in one products are always lovely, especially when they manage to really utilize the benefits of two products in one.
