A Mommy Makeover After Pregnancy

Pregnancy is one of the most exciting experiences one can have. The realization of bringing a new life into the world is one that mere words can not fully explain. Many women plan their children in a precise manner. As in, they know at what age they want to bear their first child and their last child. They know how many children they want to have, and they try to stick as closely to the plan as possible.

With other women, pregnancy just happens without forethought, but the result is usually the same: a happy mother to be.

During the months of pregnancy, the body goes through several changes, both internally, and externally. Along with the unexplained mood swings comes the increased body weight. The body also changes from its original form to make extra room for the baby to grow, and the breasts prepare for the milk production to take place. This means that the once-finely contoured body of many women will be stretched.

Oftentimes, we see celebrities pregnant one month, and the next they are back to their pre-pregnancy weight and size. This is no mystery occurrence for women who get their beautiful bodies back immediately. For some, maybe they have taken advantage of an early Mommy Makeover plastic surgery procedures.

How Long Do I Have To Wait After Pregnancy to Have Surgery Done?

Not everyone can be like celebrities, whose fame depends on their bodies and looks. Getting back into shape fast is a MUST for them. The average woman has to take more precautions. When the consideration for plastic surgery becomes a reality after having a baby, it is recommended that the woman waits until:
  • They have recovered from delivering
  • Their body has gotten back into its shape
  • They finished breastfeeding
Breastfeeding causes the breasts to remain large because they are filling up with milk. A plastic surgeon would suggest that a woman waits for at least six months after giving birth to consider plastic surgery.

At this point, the breast will have returned to their shape before the milk production. Some breasts may remain large, and some may seem to deflate after breastfeeding. Allowing them time to get back to a normal shape will help the plastic surgeon determine what they need for any type of enhancement.

The overall suggestion for when to get a mommy makeover is when a woman has had all the children she intends to have. Each pregnancy will come with its own set of body proportion issues — it’s just better to wait.

Not every woman is the same, and breasts may get considerably larger with each pregnancy and may sag a little more with each child. Having the procedure done once will ensure that the body stays in the desired shape.

What Does a Mommy Makeover Include?

The office of William A. Ross, M.D. specializes in performing a series of plastic surgeries that target the areas most often affected during pregnancy. These procedures are a combination of over one done at any specific time. They are designed specifically for moms — taking consideration of the excess weight gain and fat deposits that women experience during the months of pregnancy.

These plastic surgeries will revive the confidence in a woman with the body she so desperately wants back. The areas of concern include the breast, the abdomen (addressed with a tummy tuck or liposuction), and the arms (via arm lift) or other areas like love handles (via body lift).

There are three procedures for breast enhancement that are done after childbirth.

Breast Procedures

Breast reduction decreases the breasts after they have grown from milk production and haven’t returned to their normal size. A breast lift happens when the breasts have sagged from carrying milk and did not return to their normal position. Breast augmentation is when the breasts have deflated once breastfeeding is done and no longer need all the excess skin around them.

The incision for the breast procedure can be in many areas, but Dr. William Ross prefers to cut under the arm, under the breast, or around the areola. The actual incision site is determined by the characteristic of the breast, and the type of implant used.

Sometimes augmentation is needed when the breasts end up smaller than they were originally and need to be enhanced.

Abdomen Procedures

We do a tummy tuck on the abdomen when extra skin and stretch marks are left after the birth of the baby. Pregnancy leaves women with sagging or extra skin around the stomach area. The tummy tuck repairs the inside and the outside of the stomach. Liposuction is to get rid of excess fatty tissue in the stomach that seems to be stubborn and won’t go away by itself. It can have a woman appearing to still be pregnant even months after they have delivered. Liposuction will get the stomach muscles down to a size that may even be better than it was before the baby!

Other Procedures

These procedures include the body lift, which targets the legs and torso areas prone to some fatty tissue deposits during pregnancy. This is where the appearance of having a muffin top would be. The procedure gives these areas some definition so they can look svelte along with the rest of the new body. Arm lifts can also be done during these procedures because they too are subject to fatty deposits while pregnant.

All the surgical procedures are performed under general anesthesia.
