Discover The Best Ways To Stop Your Silver Accessories From Tarnishing

One of your favourite pieces of jewellery may be those beautiful pair of silver earrings or maybe that gemstone pendant with a shiny sterling silver chain. Silver jewellery is popular choice for men and women in today’s market. That is why there are so many forums online about how to keep silver accessories clean and untarnished.

You may hear many tips and tricks being thrown out there. Some may work for you, others won’t. That is why we have compiled some of the most effective techniques out there. These techniques will help not only prevent tarnishing but will maintain your jewellery’s original glisten.

But why does silver tarnish in the first place? It’s due to the fact that when the metal comes into contact with air and light, the process of oxidation takes place. Other things can affect the quality of silver such as moisture. If your jewellery has become too tarnished and you are looking for new sterling silver pendants, you can find some beautifully designed crystal silver pendants at silver.uk.com.

So where can you start when it comes down to maintaining your silver jewellery?

1. Think about how you store your accessory when you don’t wear it.

Its popular belief that all the damage tends to happen when the ring is on your finger or the necklace is around your neck. This isn’t necessarily the case however. If you want to store your silver and keep it protected, you can use anti-tarnish zip locked bags. Finding miniature ones that ensure all the air gets trapped and none gets in is a great way of preventing oxidisation. Without the process of oxidising, there will be minimal tarnishing! So you can forget about the fancy velvet ring boxes and regal looking containers, all you need is something simple. If you did want something more upmarket you can go to jeweller’s stores that offer special bags to store your sterling silver. Silver by Mail in UK is a good place to start when searching for online stores that offer protective containers.

2. Don’t leave the jewellery out. Also put it into the box.

Leaving the jewellery lying around in the bathroom or on the table will not prolong its beauty at all. Instead it only speeds up the tarnishing process. So when you do decide to take your accessories off at night or for long periods of time always put them straight into the box or bag.

3. Try special cloths to clean your jewellery

Anti-tarnish material can be a lifesaver to jewellery that has been slightly tarnished. It is also good for preventing it but can lessen the effects of oxidation if it has already occurred. How does it do this? It soaks up the moisture and any sulphur in the atmosphere and has been treated to stop silver tarnishing.

4. Take practical steps to stop the tarnishing yourself

It’s those small things you do that can really make a difference in the long run. For example if you are quite sporty, always remove your silver jewellery before undertaking any form of physical activity. Anything that causes sweat will speed up the tarnishing process. So even if you are putting on lotion, oils or hair spray, being aware of this will lengthen the life of your silver.

5. If you are creating a DIY solution – beware!

You can read a lot of things on the internet. Not all of them unfortunately have the best interests of your silver at heart.  For example, baking soda or toothpaste can be commonly used to clean silver jewellery. The source you are reading may make it sound like a sure thing however the ingredients can be harsh and you may end up with scratches on your jewellery.
