MAC Baking Beauties: Fresh Out Of The Oven Review

MAC stepped in the kitchen, pulled out their recipe book and whipped up some really cute names for their Baking Beauties Collection. Some products rose to baking perfection. Others fell flatter than a poorly put together angel cake. Here's my fresh-out-of-the-oven review! Now where are my oven mitts? Ouch!

Sweet-Bittersweet-Not Sweet

MAC Pink Buttercream Pearl Matte Facepowder
Sweet
MAC Pearl Matte Facepowders can be used as a blush or highlighter. Pink Buttercream in my opinion is a highlighter. I applied it to my cheek bones (see pic below)...wait for it... nothing! I applied a little more...wait for it...ashy! Why do I give it a sweet rating? Because when it's mixed with either a blush or MAC lustre drops the effects are truly beautiful. If you have a pale skin tone, you can probably get away with wearing it alone. But I honestly feel you need something (blush or lustre drops) in conjunction with this.

MAC Pink Rebel Lustre Drops
Sweet
Everybody say Abracadabra! Are you ready for the magic? Combine Pink Buttercream with the Pink Rebel Lustre Drops! Now, look at my pic (cheeks) below! I'm smiling! Look at that GLOW!  That little shine is the Pink Buttercream. The warm glow are the lustre drops. This was my first time trying this product and I loved it! MAC describes their lustre drops as a bronzer, that provides a luminous shimmering finish. Well, that's true. However, I wouldn't use this all over your face like a regular bronzer. It's way too much. You should pinpoint where you want to place these drops (cheeks etc.). It truly gives you a really nice healthy glow.

MAC Fancy Frosting & Let's Skate
Bittersweet
These are accent eye shadows (see my lavender whip pic at the very bottom of this post). A little here. A little there, around the eyes. Fancy Frosting is a white & silver shimmering accent eyeshadow. It's great for the inner corner of your eyes or bottom lashes etc. Let's Skate is a shimmery pink. One swipe is enough! Too much will leave you with a pasty mess. Why do I give it a bittersweet rating? There's fall out with both, plus I feel you can achieve the same look with a cheaper product. Another little quirk...what does Let's Skate have to do with baking? I don't get it. Am I missing something?

MAC Mooncake & Eclair
Sweet
Mooncake is a shimmering beige-y champagne eyeshadow. This shade compliments a variety of skin tones. It's also a really good neutral. There is fall out with Mooncake. Eclair is a metallic bronze-y brown chocolate eyeshadow. It's totally different from the others. No fallout (at least that I experienced while testing). It just gives you great chocolate bronze color with hints of gold.

MAC Pistachio & Confectionary* Nail Lacquer
*note: MAC spelled their product confectionary and not confectionery :(
Not Sweet
Back to the cookbook & kitchen for these nail lacquers MAC! The formula for these MACs nail lacquers were horrible. MAC always come out with beautiful colors, but application for these was HELL! They're very streaky and seem to be watered down. You need a lot of patience when applying any of their polishes (I did my best in the pictures below). They're too expensive for all this drama! I was really surprised when I received Confectionary. It's not the pretty pink so many bloggers "photographed" it to be. It's a "dirty pink" or a light pink with a hint of lilac. Guess how many coats guys? 1, wrong. 2, wrong. 3, wrong...Ding! Ding! Ding! It took 4 coats to achieve the look below. I'm not joking. The formula for Pistachio was a little better. It took 3 coats to achieve the look below. If you want the color to be lighter then go with 2 coats. Whip up another batch MAC! I know you can do better than this!

MAC Lavender Whip
Bittersweet
This shade of purple is a little tricky. Either you will love it, hate it or say WTF? It has me scratching my head. So I guess I'm in WTF mode. I've seen it on light skin tones and loved/hated it. I've seen it on dark skin tones and loved/hated it. It definitely should be tried on. I think I carry it off, but I have to watch what blush and eye makeup I use. It's just not my favorite lipstick shade on myself.

Well, just like MAC, I did my best to dress up this blog post. HaHaHa Did you guys like the flour, rolling pin, egg beaters and such as props? I was going to bust out my apron, but who am I fooling. I'm no Betty Crocker. HaHaHa I loved the Archie's Girls Collection much better. But it is what it is. MAC, just hire me as a consultant next time. I promise I'll triple your sales. Let's forget the baked goods and talk candy bar collection next! >.< I hope you guys have a great weekend.

  2. I love the bakery themed post Kim. That's why I love posts like this, although I don't use Mac makeup anymore really, unless it's a eyeshadow that I love! I'm in love with the names and the mooncake and eclair shades so much! xx/Madison Happy weekend dear!

  3. So funny, I was reading this thinking how this makeup is SO YOU! Mac really does need to hire you but then I would miss all your great reviews :) I love that you always give your true opinion too. I went through about a year of not wearing eye shadow and today I went rummaging for it, so I think it's time to get some new shadows! Will have to look to your reviews for some guidance :)

  4. Wow, what a review. Very comprehensive and I really like your honesty about the products as that's what's really helpful. The Mooncake eye shadow looks great, I'm always on the lookout for a neutral eye shadow with a hint of shimmer to make me look awake ;-) Have a wonderful and sunny weekend xo

  5. I love your reviews, Kim! Always honest and useful. I love the packaging and adore the effect of the bronzing drops, but am so disappointed to hear about the polishes! x

  6. Hiya Kim!! Haha..you make me laugh, I appreciate these honest reviews, if a product is junk, we should be let to know about it & that's what you do :)) What a shame the ones that were bittersweet for you, they look very pretty too. I hate nail polish that takes ages to apply and it streaks, drives me crazy, I don't have time to sit and wait and wait. Their idea was fab though, maybe go back and have a re-think on some of them to improve it!! Have a marvellous weekend Kim, enjoy yourself!! xx

  9. Kim, I really love the sweetness of your blog! Everytime is a big pleasure to read your posts:) I find your reviews so informative and sincere, really useful! I still havent seen the collection and neither knew it was out. What I'd love to try are the drops (I like the effect on you, very natural and beautiful) and the mooncake eyeshadow (I like neutral shades at the moment). Happy Friday my dear, big hugs! xo

  10. Ooh, these sound so sweet, and you look adorable!! I can't use makeup products on my skin as I'm allergic, but I have to say "lustre drops" certainly sound wonderful! I do use nail polish though, and would have been attracted to the minty green, but phew, thank you for your review!

  13. Honestly when I saw the first picture I thought it was Mac campaign: I love the scenario you created for this post!! But what I love the most are your straightforward observations. To tell the truth, I'm not going to try any of the products in this range, because it looks like they had to keep up with this summer trend of candy colours but they where not prepared on the topic. The nail lacquer is acceptable only because you have beautiful hands. I like the blue nail polish, except pistachios are green :-) The lustre drops give you a radiant glow, while I don't see the effect of the blush/highlighter.After thinking a little about the lipstick, and going through the WTF phase, I believe that the problem with that lipstick is that the colour is too intense. Will you try a small dose of it with a coat of transparent lipgloss? I'd love to see if it works. Hope I didn't keep it too long. I'd love to write detailed reviews on beauty products but I don't master an extensive vocabulary in this area, so I'll keep enjoying and commenting at length your reviews!! Thank you love!

  14. I love that you are completely honest about the products you review. That's a bummer about the nail polish because they are pretty colors. No nailpolish is worth putting 4 coats on!

  19. Thanks for the honest review, Kim - I loved the idea behind the Baking Beauties collection but looking at the colours, I really didn't see anything that would be for me. Pastels are just so tough to wear! I think you did an admirable job and pull off some really tough colours with style :) That said, thanks for the introduction to Lustre Drops - that glow you achieved is just stunning and I definitely want to try it myself!

  20. Some of these names made me scratch my head. I think it's gotten to the point where it's just a bit too much. What the heck is a lustre drop? Thanks for your explanations though. They obviously helped. :)

  23. Kim, this review is stellar, I love all your props and the title image is just grand! I'm a bit bummed about the nail polishes! I actually purchased two estee lauder shades that look similar in the bottle and I was hoping the less expensive mac versions would be better! Those pearl drops look FABULOUS on you, so glowing!

  31. Oh I am loving lavender lipstick this season. It is such a great necessity. I have a huge problem of my lipstick not showing up on my photos. My lips are disappearing lips when I smile my toothy smile. My lips turn to slits. But if I am just seeing my reflection, I have nice color on. hummmmmm? Great post with all this MAC stuff! Wow!

  33. Lurv how you dressed the post up!! The sound of a baking themed collection is music to my ears. I love the look of the pink buttercream face power, so pretty on you. Don't think I could do the first two eye shadows, too shimmery, but the second two I really like. Such a pity about the formula of the nail lacers because the colours are beautiful and fresh! excellent review! Thanks for your daily dose of kindness over at my blog, its much appreciated!

Shame about the watery polishes - I hate having to apply more than 1 coat to get the perfect colour. They were such nice shades too.
